Dates: February 21st/22nd
Location: Gleniff Horseshoe, Co. Sligo
A winter weekend exploring the abandoned mines scattered throughout the Gleniff Horseshoe. This is a remote, rugged area with a high concentration of old workings, adits, shafts, and collapsed sites.
There are numerous mines in the area, many of which we’ll be inspecting, exploring, and descending over the weekend. Expect a mix of surface investigation, underground exploration, and vertical elements depending on conditions, access, and the experience of those attending.
For those with the appetite (and ability) to push a bit further, the area is also home to Diarmuid and Gráinne’s Cave, the highest cave in Ireland, adding an extra layer of challenge for those keen on both mines and caves.
The Hub will be open from Friday evening through to Saturday night for anyone attending. You’re welcome to arrive Friday, get settled, and sort gear ahead of an early start on Saturday.
Saturday will focus on one or more mine systems within the Gleniff area. Sunday will be flexible — either further exploration, revisiting sites of interest, or skills practice depending on weather, daylight, and how people are feeling after day one.
This is an adventurous club trip, not a guided experience. Everyone attending should be comfortable in abandoned mine environments, capable of making sound decisions, and willing to contribute to rigging, derigging, and group safety.
